Wireless TV headphones
Choose from various types of technology for your TV headphones:
- Infrared TV headphones offer excellent sound quality within a radius of around ten metres. The sound is transmitted when your headphones are facing the base. The sound will temporarily cut out if you leave the room, if you turn your back to the transmitter, or if someone passes between you and the transmitter. The reception will be perfect as long as you are at the same level as the transmitter base (the quality may suffer if you watch TV lying down, for example). - FM TV headphones: FM headphones offer high-performance transmission, in the sense that this is the type that offers the best reach (up to 100 metres) and that can transmit the signal through walls. - HiFi TV headphones: HiFi offers a sort of hybrid technology (between infrared and FM). This type of headphones works within a radius of thirty metres, and the sound signal can travel through walls. These headphones offer excellent sound quality and are not vulnerable to radio interference (no static due to a mobile phone, etc.). Choosing the shape of your TV headphones:
There are three types of headphones:
‘Stethoscope’ style TV headphones, the most common. As their name suggests, they resemble a doctor’s stethoscope. These headphones are generally very lightweight (50 g at their lightest) and are suitable for most people.
Traditional or circumaural headphones: these headphones have cushions and casings that cover the user’s ears entirely.
There are two advantages to this type:
They can be used without removing your hearing aids, and they offer particularly good sound quality (ideal for both TV and music).
The only disadvantage of these headphones is their weight.
They are slightly heavier than stethoscope headphones, which may be uncomfortable if you use them all day long (for shorter usage periods, there is generally little discomfort).
Headphones with an induction loop: These are the least common and are only for wearers of hearing aids with the T position (here, ‘T’ stands for ‘telephone’). They send the sound directly to your hearing aids, without going through their microphone! It is very important to have your hearing aids properly configured to make the most of the T position.
How to plug in your TV headphones:
There are several ways of connecting the headphones to the TV (in fact, TV headphones offer all but two connection options):
- In the ‘headphone’ jack at the front or side of your television (this will cut off the sound from the speakers).
- In the SCART socket (in this case, the sound will come from the headphones AND the TV speakers).
- In the RCA socket (red and white cable) – the sound will come from both the headphones and the TV speakers.
- Some models can be connected to the optical socket, so that the sound is played separately in the headphones and from the TV speakers.
Additional functions:
- TV headphones + sound amplifier:
